1879 Flyer

The oldest document in the possession of the L.I. Turners is a flyer produced when our society was only 4 years old.  It advertises a Children and Junior Gymnastic Exhibition along with the giving of Christmas presents at the Turnhall in Astoria.  In addition a skit would be enacted and followed by a Social Dance.

The copy below was reprinted from page 3, (Volume 6 #8) of the November 1982 Long Island Turners Newsletter and submitted by Herbert Mildt.  That page included translation from the original German and is presented below.

Herbert points out the interesting pricing of the event which was:

Admission ... 25 cents for a couple
Each additional Lady... 15 cents

Keep in mind that this was a fund raising event and prices may have been a bit higher than normal.

The document itself varies somewhat from the one we present above.  The one shown above was scanned from a newsletter, and cleaned to show most of the printing.  The Gut Heil (Greetings) on the right was copied from the one on the right and the bottom line may be only a part of the original.  They were both obscured by the aging process of the original flyer.
